The North Carolina Legislature's Blueprint for the War on Democracy and Equality
The North Carolina Legislature has passed a series of laws that are designed to suppress the vote, gerrymander electoral districts, and undermine the power of the courts. These laws are part of a larger nationwide effort by the Republican Party to restrict voting rights and consolidate power. The ultimate goal of this effort is to create a permanent Republican majority in the United States, regardless of the will of the people.

Voter Suppression
One of the most egregious laws passed by the North Carolina Legislature is the Voter ID law. This law requires voters to present a photo ID at the polls in order to cast a ballot. Studies have shown that Voter ID laws disproportionately impact minority voters, who are less likely to have photo IDs. In North Carolina, the Voter ID law was found to have a discriminatory impact on African American voters. The law was ultimately struck down by the courts, but it has been reintroduced in the legislature.
In addition to the Voter ID law, the North Carolina Legislature has also passed a number of other laws that make it more difficult to vote. These laws include:
- Reducing the number of early voting days
- Eliminating same-day registration
- Restricting access to absentee ballots
- Purging voter rolls
These laws have made it more difficult for people to vote, especially for people of color, young people, and low-income people.
Gerrymandering
Gerrymandering is the practice of drawing electoral districts in a way that gives one party an unfair advantage. The North Carolina Legislature has engaged in extensive gerrymandering in order to create Republican-majority districts. This has resulted in a situation where Republicans control the legislature even though they receive a minority of the vote.
In 2017, the North Carolina Supreme Court ruled that the state's congressional districts were unconstitutionally gerrymandered. The court ordered the legislature to redraw the districts. However, the legislature has refused to do so. As a result, the state's congressional districts remain gerrymandered.
Undermining the Courts
The North Carolina Legislature has also taken steps to undermine the power of the courts. In 2017, the legislature passed a law that eliminated the Judicial Standards Commission, which investigates complaints of judicial misconduct. The legislature has also passed laws that make it more difficult for people to sue the state. These laws make it more difficult to hold the government accountable for its actions.
The War on Democracy and Equality
The laws passed by the North Carolina Legislature are part of a larger nationwide effort by the Republican Party to restrict voting rights, gerrymander electoral districts, and undermine the power of the courts. The ultimate goal of this effort is to create a permanent Republican majority in the United States, regardless of the will of the people.
This effort is a threat to democracy and equality in the United States. It is important to stand up to these laws and fight for the right to vote, the right to fair representation, and the right to hold the government accountable.
