In the year 1189, Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura shogunate, established a military stronghold on the site to quell the rebellious Fujiwara clan. During the subsequent Muromachi period (1336-1573),Komine Castle became an important strategic outpost for the powerful Date clan, who expanded and fortified the castle to enhance its defensive capabilities.
