The Legacy of Henry Stimson

Henry L. Stimson was a distinguished American statesman who served as Secretary of War under President William Howard Taft and Secretary of State under President Herbert Hoover. He was also a key figure in the Republican Party.

Stimson was born in New York City in 1867. He graduated from Yale University and Harvard Law School. After practicing law for several years, he entered politics.

Stimson served in the New York State Assembly and the United States House of Representatives. In 1911, President Taft appointed him Secretary of War. Stimson served in that position until 1913.

In 1929, President Hoover appointed Stimson Secretary of State. Stimson served in that position until 1933. During his tenure, he played a key role in the development of the Hoover Doctrine, which opposed European colonialism in the Americas.

Stimson was a strong supporter of the League of Nations. He also worked to promote disarmament and international cooperation.

After leaving government, Stimson remained active in public life. He served as a delegate to the United Nations and as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Stimson died in 1950. He is remembered as a distinguished statesman and a champion of international cooperation.
