Vertebrates: Animal Science for Kids
Vertebrates are a group of animals that have a backbone. This backbone, also known as a spinal column, is made up of a series of bones called vertebrae. Vertebrates are divided into five main classes: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
Fish
Fish are vertebrates that live in water. They have gills that allow them to breathe underwater. Fish have a wide range of body shapes and sizes, from the tiny minnow to the massive whale shark. Some fish, like the salmon, migrate long distances to spawn. Others, like the goldfish, stay in the same place their entire lives.

Examples of fish:
- Salmon
- Tuna
- Goldfish
- Whale shark
- Minnow
Amphibians
Amphibians are vertebrates that can live both in water and on land. They have lungs that allow them to breathe air, but they also have gills that allow them to breathe underwater. Amphibians have smooth, moist skin that helps them to absorb oxygen from the air and water. Frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts are all examples of amphibians.
Examples of amphibians:
- Frog
- Toad
- Salamander
- Newt
Reptiles
Reptiles are vertebrates that have dry, scaly skin. They have lungs that allow them to breathe air, but they do not have gills. Reptiles lay eggs that are covered in a hard shell. Snakes, lizards, turtles, and crocodiles are all examples of reptiles.
Examples of reptiles:
- Snake
- Lizard
- Turtle
- Crocodile
Birds
Birds are vertebrates that have feathers. They have lungs that allow them to breathe air, and they lay eggs that are covered in a hard shell. Birds have a unique ability to fly, which allows them to travel long distances. Hawks, eagles, owls, and penguins are all examples of birds.
Examples of birds:
- Hawk
- Eagle
- Owl
- Penguin
Mammals
Mammals are vertebrates that have fur or hair. They have lungs that allow them to breathe air, and they give birth to live young. Mammals produce milk to feed their young. Humans, dogs, cats, and whales are all examples of mammals.
Examples of mammals:
- Human
- Dog
- Cat
- Whale
Vertebrates are a diverse group of animals that play an important role in the ecosystem. They are found in all parts of the world, from the deepest oceans to the highest mountains. Vertebrates provide food, clothing, and shelter for humans, and they also help to control the population of other animals.
