The story of the Crewe Rolls-Royce factory begins in 1906, when the company purchased a site on Pyms Lane in Crewe. At the time, Rolls-Royce was a relatively young company, having been founded just three years earlier by Charles Rolls and Henry Royce. The Crewe factory was chosen for its excellent rail and road connections, as well as its proximity to skilled engineering labor.

In the early years, the Crewe factory focused primarily on the production of chassis for Rolls-Royce cars. However, as the company grew and expanded, the factory gradually took on a wider range of manufacturing activities. By the outbreak of World War I in 1914, the Crewe factory was producing a full range of Rolls-Royce cars, from the small and nimble 10 hp model to the powerful and luxurious 40/50 hp Silver Ghost.

World War I and Beyond (1914-1945)

During World War I, the Crewe factory played a vital role in the war effort. The company produced a wide range of aero engines for the Royal Flying Corps, including the Merlin engine, which powered the legendary Spitfire fighter plane. In addition, the Crewe factory also produced armored cars and other military vehicles.

After the war, Rolls-Royce continued to expand and grow. In the 1920s, the company introduced the Phantom I, which quickly became one of the most prestigious and sought-after cars in the world. The Crewe factory also played a key role in the development of the Rolls-Royce R engine, which powered the Schneider Trophy-winning Supermarine S.6B seaplane.

During World War II, the Crewe factory once again played a vital role in the war effort. The company produced a wide range of aero engines for the Royal Air Force, including the Merlin and Griffon engines. In addition, the Crewe factory also produced aircraft components and other war materiel.

The Post-War Years (1945-1970)

The Crewe factory also played a key role in the development of the Rolls-Royce RB211 jet engine, which powered the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar airliner.

In the 1960s, Rolls-Royce acquired the Bentley Motor Company. The Crewe factory became the production center for both Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars. In 1971, Rolls-Royce went into receivership, but the Crewe factory was saved by the British government.
